


SHIRLEY VILLAVICENCIO PIZANGO - Dode konijnen, kapitalisme en feminisme (De Standaard, Jozefien Van Beek)
Bekende laureaten zijn onder meer Rinus Van de Velde, Koen van den Broek en Nicolas Provost. De tien studenten die in het vreemde coronajaar 2020 afstudeerden, stellen nu tentoon op de Gossetsite in Molenbeek.
Curator Daniella Géo, die de studenten twee jaar lang volgde, wilde geen thema of concept vastleggen. Ze gaf de tentoonstelling de titel In a long blink of an eye. ‘Een toespeling op onze contradictorische perceptie van tijd’, zegt Géo. Toch zijn er enkele rode draden. Zo houden meerdere kunstenaars zich bezig met machtsverhoudingen: tussen mannen en vrouwen, tussen blank en zwart, tussen mens en natuur. De Peruaanse schilder Shirley Villavicencio Pizango, die al werd opgepikt door galerie Geukens & De Vil, maakte de installatie A tear for power....

Shirley Villavicencio Pizango was born in Lima but has lived in Belgium since she was five. As a child she already knew that she wanted to become an artist, but she was amazed by how women and specifically women of colour have been depicted on the canvas throughout art history: viewed from a combination of the oriental and male gaze, as mentioned above. Villavicencio Pizango: “I think it is very important to paint people with a brown skin colour: beautifully and frequently. To give them a new, powerful place in painting.” In her work we don’t see any slaves or even the slightest suggestion of primitiveness, but rather people of colour who are empowered, who are the protagonist in their own story.
