UNDERCURRENT
In undercurrent, zijn derde solotentoonstelling bij Geukens & De Vil, presenteert Peter De Meyer nieuwe werken die een verstilde spanning inhouden. Deze spanning is meestal een gevolg van de integratie van actie en reactie. Onder het schijnbaar roerloze oppervlak is de potentie voelbaar van een kracht die elk ogenblik door kan breken of dat misschien al heeft gedaan. Met welk moment in de tijd je als toeschouwer wordt geconfronteerd – of je de aanleiding ziet dan wel het resultaat –, is vaak niet duidelijk; het achterliggende verhaal wordt niet onthuld. De werken fungeren veeleer als sporen, materiële aanwijzingen van de aanwezigheid van de kunstenaar, en peilen naar de processen van perceptie en communicatie die ze ontlokken. Dit is ook het geval bij de werken met een directe referentie aan de kunstwereld. In hun combinatie van beweging en tegenbeweging, stroom en onderstroom relativeren ze bovendien de identiteit van de individuele kunstenaar en alluderen ze op het feit dat hij zowel weerstand kan bieden tegen de onderstroom als hem gebruiken.

In undercurrent, his third solo exhibition at Geukens & Devil's, Peter De Meyer presents new works that entail a muted tension. This tension is usually caused by the integration of action and reaction. Underneath the seemingly motionless surface, one can feel the potency of a power that can erupt any minute or maybe already has. For the spectator it is not always clear which moment of time he is confronted with – either the cause or the result; the underlying story is not revealed. The works rather function as traces, material clues of the artist's presence, and explore the processes of perception and communication they may elicit. This is also the case for the works with direct reference to the art world. Moreover, in their combination of movement and countermovement, current and undercurrent they put the identity of the individual artist into perspective and make an allusion to the fact that he can both offer resistance to the undercurrent and make use of it.

Peter De Meyer "Lost & Found" GEUKENS & DE VIL ENGLISH Peter De Meyer (Antwerp, Belgium, 1981) is a close observer of his daily environment. He examines (found) objects to place them in an unexpected context or to subtly deconstruct and transform them. With these minimal interventions he tries to produce a maximal effect. The result of these delocalizations and deformations is sober, but never easy. Peter De Meyer's work plays with the idea that used objects carry a long history and evoke a range of associations, both in the individual and collective memory. In this way it refers to the idea of transitoriness. In addition, it distorts the familiar relationship between subject and object and invites the spectators to look and experience differently.
NEDERLANDS Peter De Meyer (Antwerpen, 1981) stelt zich op als een aandachtig waarnemer van zijn nabije omgeving. Onderzoekend benadert hij (gevonden) objecten om deze vervolgens in een onverwachte context onder te brengen of ze op subtiele wijze te ontleden en te transformeren. Met een minimale ingreep probeert hij steeds een maximaal effect te sorteren. Het resultaat van deze delocaties en deformaties is overwegend sober, maar nooit eenvoudig. De Meyer's werk speelt vaak met de gedachte dat een gebruikt voorwerp een hele geschiedenis met zich meedraagt en zowel in het individuele als in het collectieve geheugen een reeks associaties oproept. Op die manier refereert het aan het idee van vergankelijkheid. Daarnaast vertekent het de vertrouwde relatie tussen subject en object en nodigt het de toeschouwers uit om anders te kijken en te ervaren.
